By building a transparent, efficient, and fair publishing system that values scientific quality over journal branding, we enable researchers to focus on impactful discoveries, fostering a more collaborative and equitable scientific community.
THE CURATE CHALLENGES
Knowledge sharing in science is stuck in an outdated model that is needlessly hierarchical, lacks transparency, puts the priorities of publishing above those of science, and is expensive and slow. We're working on what would work better for scientists.
Quality vs Brand
Science is not good science just because the right journal published it. We seek new, independent ways to assess Quality, and separately, Impact, separate from Brand.
Direct vs Mediated
Science is an ongoing conversation that should accelerate in our digital world. Publishing presents an obstacle to direct exchanges between scientists, peer improvement, and transparency. What does a better system look like?
Reviewers & Incentives
To contribute pro-bono to the process of peer review is a time-honored tradition, but the genteel agreement now seems like a sucker’s game profiting the (publishing) Houses, not science. What does reform look like?
THE DISCOVERY STACK PILOT
It's Out! The Discovery Stack Pilot Paper
The Discovery Stack Pilot gave us insights on how pre-prints offer the opportunity to expand approaches to better evaluating the Good in Science.
118 volunteer reviewers were asked to review a set of pre-publication papers EITHER for Quality or Impact.
Quality reviews tended to be quite uniform, but Impact reviews were more subjective and varied.
If Quality is indeed relatively easy to assess, while Impact is far easier to manipulate, separating the two may allow scientists to cut to the chase about what's GOOD more quickly and act on it more nimbly.
